Ziyarat!
You too are a female Companion!
You love the righteous people of every era and every city. You love all those who, before you, joined the caravan of Tawheed among the previous nations, and you also love those who will remain firm upon Tawheed and have not even been born yet!
Your Lord is your Beloved, and your Prophet ﷺ said that Islam is a call whose roots run deep into the soil of history!
Your connection with this religion did not begin merely with your birth (your natural disposition); rather, it has continued since that very first struggle between truth and falsehood, when the accursed Iblis refused to prostrate before your father, Adam عليه السلام!
Nor will this connection end with your death. You are the daughter of a creed whose responsibility and obligation will only cease when Israfeel عليه السلام blows the Trumpet.
And because you once heard the Noble Prophet ﷺ say:
“I wish I could see my brothers.”
The Companions رضي الله عنهم asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Are we not your brothers?”
He ﷺ said: “Rather, you are my Companions, and our brothers are those who have not yet come (into this world). And I will be their forerunner at the Pond of Kawthar.”
The Companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah! How will you recognize those members of your Ummah who will come after you?”
He ﷺ said: “What do you think? If a man had horses with white foreheads and white feet among completely black horses, would he not recognize his own horses?”
The Companions replied: “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah!”
He ﷺ said: “Then they will come on the Day of Judgment with their faces, hands, and feet shining because of the traces of Wudu.”
O female Companion!
Your heart longs to hear the stories of the righteous and pious people of the era of Prophethood, and today you are being presented with one such account. So, prepare your heart and listen attentively!
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal رحمه الله was a student of Imam al-Shafi‘i رحمه الله. Imam Ahmad would frequently mention Imam al-Shafi‘i in the presence of his family and would greatly praise and speak highly of him.
One day, Imam al-Shafi‘i رحمه الله came as a guest to the home of his student, Imam Ahmad. The guest ate his meal and then retired to his bed.
After some part of the night had passed, Imam Ahmad prayed Fajr with his family and then returned to his bed.
In the morning, Imam Ahmad’s daughter said to her father:
— “Dear father, is this the very Imam al-Shafi‘i whom you used to tell me about?”
— He replied, “Yes, my daughter.”
— She said, “I have heard you speak about his greatness, but during the night I did not see him offer any voluntary prayers, nor did I see him engaged in remembrance (dhikr), supplications, or his regular devotional practices. And I noticed three things about him!”
— He asked, “And what are those things, my daughter?”
— She said, “When we presented food before him, he ate a great deal, contrary to what you had told me about him. He did not get up during the night to pray! And when he prayed Fajr with us, he did not even perform Wudu!”
Thereupon, Imam Ahmad informed Imam al-Shafi‘i رحمه الله of what his daughter had said.
